Getting a grip on innovative design and comfort

When Red Devil came to us to resolve spackling blisters, cuts and hand fatigue, we went for design comfort and smarter production.

WHAT WE DID

Category Audit Industrial Design

CHALLENGE

Previous spackling and scraping tools suffered from outdated ergonomics, resulting in hand fatigue, blisters and cuts. Red Devil challenged us to redefine the category and build a story of compelling shelf impact, utility and cost for retail partners such as DIY specialty stores. We knew the successful design had to work for consumers both visually and functionally.

SOLUTION

To optimize ergonomics for scraping and puttying, a wide range of handle forms were tested to generate strong intuitive cues, powerful brand imagery and a positive handling experience. Rather than utilizing the tired standard rivet process, the winning handle design was produced using automated blade insertion and a dual-shot molding process to reduce cost and increase durability across the multi-SKU line. Between Red Devil’s new, comfortable design and brightly colored brand extension, consumers will never look back to their old scrapers again.

We designed a rubber grip that fit comfortably in the hand and decreased hand fatigue. Prototypes helped establish just how the finished handle should feel and look. Between Red Devil’s new, comfortable design and brightly colored brand extension, consumers will never look back to their old scrapers again.
Preliminary concept drawings incorporate comfortable grips and a sleek design.
